What does it mean if the smell still remains after unclogging a bathroom sink?

Water would pool in the sink and drain slowly. Also, a foul stench would come from the drain.
Took a part the u shaped pipe and cleaned the pipes on both sides with a brush designed to get inside pipes really well. Cleaned the u pipe and put it back. Got a lot of nasty gunk out but stench is still there.
What else can I do before calling a plumber?
