Why the little drink in the big glass?

What is the point and purpose of serving alcoholic beverages such as scotch in a wide, heavy-based tumbler when the amount of liquid is so small? Why not use a small glass?

I pretty much stick to wine, seldom have a mixed drink and never order straight liquor, so I don’t get this practice. Is it anything other than a quirky custom?
