Can you number the faces of a pair of dice so that they can display from 01 to 31 for the days of the month?

I saw this device someone had bought that showed the month on one piece and then used a pair of dice to display the day of the month. I later tried to figure out how the dice were numbered, and fell short. There is a slight trick that is required.
Once you figure out how to number the dice, can you compute the total of how many different numbers can be displayed?
