Where should I live in Brooklyn?

I am moving to New York in a month and will be in town looking for an apartment in a week and a half (10/20–10/27). I am starting a clothing company with my wife (www.hanahattori.com) and I’m looking for a place that is in my budget ($1400), safe and preferably in a place with networking opportunities for our business, but that’s not as big of a deal. Any tips on where to live and how to look for housing besides Craigslist would be awesome!
