Is it harder to make connections online than it used to be?

Seems like I used to come home after work (2nd and 3rd shift) and could go online and talk to folks (only the online community seemed to be awake at those hours) but lately I can't find a groove...membership requirements, opening accounts, etc. Are there good, casual chat sites out there?
