What is a reliable alternative to iTunes for loading iPods?

Specifically Shuffles & Nanos. iPhone and Touch compatibility would be a plus but not necessary.
I keep running across “good” programs and then across posts stating the programs are not kept updated and may or may not work.
What have you tried?
