Is Javascript the best way to go when doing a ... photography portfolio site?

Where can I find samples/classes/tutorials/books that are EASY to understand. I know BASIC actionscript (flash) and BASIC html I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to learn “A” language, but don’t know which one (I’ve heard Pearl, Javascript, VI and even “dude just do CSS” ...)
help please, I don’t know which direction to go. Thanks!
