Why can't I get the latest version of ITunes to work?

I have downloaded the new version, and it tells me it is successfully downloaded. But when I click on ITunes to get to the ITunes store it says “ITunes could not connect to Itunes store. Make sure your network connection is active.” I was able to use the old version.
