Can I give my airline miles to another person for free travel?

I would like to give 60,000 miles to my work study student so that we can both travel to Japan for work. The miles are my own personal ones. If this is possible, what is the standard operating procedure for doing this with Northwest? How much advanced planning is necessary? Done on the web? Phone? We are hoping to travel in March. Is there enough time left to process this?
