What the flip is was wrong with my hand?

Look at your hand just below where the middle finger joins the palm (often, there’s a callus there). Squeeze that point.

Earlier today when I did that, it frickin’ hurt. And yet I could still ball up a fist, spread my fingers wide, whatever without any pain at all.

Then, a couple hours later after I first noticed the pain when gripping the steering wheel of my car, the pain vanished. There’s now no discomfort at all.

My grandmother-in-law says it might be a tumor.
