Do you think lurve points detract from the true objective of Fluther?

It seems as if some people, apparently in the quest to rack up huge numbers of points, answer serious questions offhandedly and without consideration to the one who asked the question or to others who responded earnestly. Sometimes it is funny and that is okay but often, it is simply inane or rude and therefore somewhat annoying. Are the points necessary?
