How come my iMac gets slower Wifi than my friend's MacBook? How can I fix this?

I was using my friend’s MacBook in my house today, only meters away from my iMac, but for some reason her MacBook gets 4 bars of WiFi and my iMac (the most recent one) gets only 2 on average.
