How can I use Google Maps to make a map that I can copy and insert into a word processing document to print?

This might sound straightforward, but when I try to do it, I discover that there is no obvious way to create, for example, a GIF, JPEG, or PNG file from the map displayed by Google Maps in my Web browser (Firefox). If I download the Web page of the map I discover that it’s a mosaic of lots of little PNG files, not one large map image; that’s too cumbersome for me. I am able to snapshot the Web page and use the resulting image file, but it’s at screen resolution and so not of adequate quality for hardcopy printing.
