Hard ball like thing on the joint of my middle finger?

my finger was kind of hurting so i rubbed it and i felt a little ball underneath the skin. sort of like a bb but a little smaller, and when i relax my finger you can sort of see it sticking out. im just wondering what it might be and if i should be worried..
