What is a nice, (light) gift to bring to an international host?

My sister and I are traveling abroad and staying with a family friend for a few days. We want to bring a small gift as a thank you. We are already bringing him some books he asked for as a favor, since he can’t get them where he lives in eastern Europe. Also, we’re backpacking, so it should be preferably something fairly light. Any suggestions?
