Whats a good camcorder for an amatuer film maker?

I’m an amatuer, very humble movie maker and I need a good camcorder; I’ve got a low budget, and when I say a low budget I mean a REALLY low budget, like under $1000. Way under $1000. I want a camera with great quality because I’m focused on making movies not just recording birthday parties and sports events. I’d need some image stabilization and good optical zoom quality. any suggestions?
