I just moved near the ocean, and would like to take up surf and pier fishing. Where do I start?

I just got a new job in NE Fl., and I would like to start fishing around here. I’ve seen people pull up flounder and other things at piers and the intracoastal. I think this would be a great thing to do and enjoy with my son (he’s 5), but I’ve never had any exposure to this and am a bit lost. I did by a rod and reel at Wal-Mart designed specifically for “Surf and Pier Fishing”, came with a small, loaded, tacklebox, too. “Everything you need to start fishing today”.
Where do I go from here?
