$299 for PS3, major Pro or Con?

I know that gaming systems for through different stages to, “perfect” the standard, but have they downgraded the PS3 for the new price?
When the PS3 was released it had very few options and was reverse compatible with the earlier Playstation games. The newer model of systems have been lacking the reverse compatible feature and for some that was a big selling point.
Does anyone know if they’ve changed something of importance to make it drastically cheaper?
