How can I politely decline shaking hands with people so I can avoid contacting their germs?

One of the best ways to avoid the flu is to avoid contact with other people’s germs, so I do NOT want to shake hands. Yet, people persistent in shoving their germ-ridden paws out to me. How do I decline in a way that’s not awkward?
