What are the best IRC channels on the web today?

Also, what defines a good (or best) IRC channel? There are plenty out there for specific interests, and plenty general ones, but I’m looking for a good all-around channel with interesting conversations and members that aren’t too grumpy.

So far, I’ve explored #xkcd and enjoyed it, but there must be more to the system of tubes than one channel.
