Do you think labor unions get paid off for endorsing political candidates?

i work for local government and our labor union has once again waited until the last minute to tell us who they endorse. one of my coworkers said it is because they get paid by the politicians to endorse them and that takes place at the last minute. i would not doubt that the unions get paid off for their endorsements. i am wondering if this is something other flutherites are aware of, or is it just a rumor?
