Flash cs4!! - Is there a way to put multiple animations on one layer without just “extending” the original one?

Hey, I just recently bought adobe flash cs4. I’m new to the program but I’m working on a pretty complex animation. The thing is I have whole layers taking up space for an object thats on the stage for like 1 second. and the layers are adding up fast. is there a way to put multiple animations on one layer without just “extending” the original one….so can continue the animation on the same layer? does this make any sense? hah.
