What is the best way to get dried wax off of a plate?

I put a dish underneath candlesticks so that the wax wouldn’t get on the table. Now the wax is on the plate, and I’m wondering how to get the wax off? And in the future, is there a good solution besides putting aluminum foil under the candlesticks, which is effective but not aesthetically pleasing?
