How do you break the ice when meeting someone new?

Friday while wasting time in my school’s cafeteria I kept catching glances with this other equally bored kid. after like 30 minutes he held up a sign that said ‘What’s your name’ followed by a sign that aid ‘I promise I’m not real creepy’ It made me think I cant remember the lat time I introduced myself to someone I didn’t know AT ALL. So how do you guys go about talking with new people?
