How to get spilled milk out of carpet?

I spilled milk. It fell on the carpet. It was vitamin A & D enriched. It was not organic. The carpet is a light brown color and can best described as somewhere between cut pile and frieze. Oh, and in case this makes a difference, the milk had dissolved particles of multi-grain Cheerios, not honey-nut. My concern is that the milk protein will become one with the carpet and the ensuing bacteria will inhabit the microscopic pores and small rodents, ferrets, carpet louse will follow their noses to my breakfast nook.
