What is a sorority and its benefits?

When people say “I lived in a sorority for four years” what do they mean? Is it like a school or a help house? Or what?
I heard it on the movie “A time to kill” and was curious as to what the guy meant when he said I maried a girl from a sorority.
Also what are the benefits of living in one? If any?
