Is it ok to wear ankle boots if you have curvy calves?

I don’t usually go for trends, but ankle-high boots are really cute. I have a pair of black buckled ones that I wear with jeans all the time. I’d like to wear them with skirts, but I’m scared that they will make my legs look stumpy. Maybe I could do what this woman is doing, and wear lighter shoes with darker stockings? What do you guys think?
