Calling all car mechanics! What are the noises, symptoms, signs that the CV joint(s) are going out in a vehicle?

My Desperate Daughter is going to be in a position to buy a 1999 “Intrigue” tomorrow. It has quite a few cosmetic issues, but I’ve heard it run and the engine is good. The interior is good. They were originally asking $1000, but she has the seller down to $700. However, the seller told her (and we verified) that the tires are pert-near bald.

Well, when she drives it on a straight-away, and accelerates, we hear what we assumed were the bad tires making quite a bit of a loud “humming” and “rumbling” noise.” However, today she has acquaintances telling her it might be the CV joints which would be a prohibitive expense…..but I’m getting other opinions to the contrary, saying it might well be just the tires.

So if it WERE the CV joints, what other “symptoms” might we expect.

No, she doesn’t have enough money to get a better car. Not an option.
