Over exaggeration when we convey something painful?

Why are we prone to exaggerate unrealistic scenarios when explaining how we feel/felt? i.e. “I feel as though I got hit by a bus!”...I mean seriously just how many people use this term and actually are correct because they WERE hit by one?
