How do you balance a cross section in geology?

I’m not a Geologist myself, but I need to balance a cross section.

I’ve found some relevant literature online, but not being a geologist myself I don’t quite understand what they are talking about, so it would be really helpful if someone here could give me, or point me in the direction of, some really simple instructions.
