Why do school teachers make more money than college professors?

i am not sure if it’s like this all around the country, but where i live (NY state) a high school teacher in a good district can make $100,000 whereas a college professor will make about $60 or $70,000. the requirements for a school teacher are a Master’s Degree and the requirements for a professor (except at a community college) are a PhD. In addition, college professors have to write papers – “publish or perish” in order to be respected by their peers. why the disparity in salary?
