Would you prefer a gas fire or a real wood fire if you had the option?

A warm fire and your fav. beverage with your s/o watching the snow fall can be very romantic, especially this time of year. Real wood fireplaces are messy and gas ones only require a flick of a switch. But if you had your choice and the resources (and a partner willing to have everything ready), which would you prefer?
