How to clean an old reclining chair?

I recently inherited an old reclining chair that I absolutely love. It is in good shape structurally and mechanically, but it is beginning to show a lot of dirt. I don’t have the money to have it professionally cleaned (or re-upholstered), but I’d like to freshen it up. What can I do to clean it up without damaging the already aging fabric?
