With a tire tread of 6.2, do I need a new tire?

While traveling, I stopped at a quick lube a few days ago for an oil change. They told me normal tire tread is 10, and I needed to buy 3 new tires (I did not purchase any). The lowest tire tread was 6.2. How do I know for sure when I need to purchase new tires?
