Does anyone ever eat the end pieces of a loaf of bread?

For years, my family has always discarded the first and last piece of bread. its like the end pieces have a disease. no one eats them, so they are thrown out. whats wrong with the end pieces in a loaf of bread? they still make good toast. some things in life i will never understand.
