Should I ask my neighbors before putting up wooden wind chimes?

I’d like to buy some wooden/bamboo wind chimes, but I don’t know if that’s something that would annoy my neighbors. All I can think about is how, when I was in my teens, my grandmother once made me sneak over to her neighbor’s house and steal their wind chimes because she hated hearing them!

I like the sound of wooden ones, and I would think they would be less grating to others.

What do you think? Should I just put them up and see if I get any comments, or should I go around and ask first?
