I need to convert an mp4 video file to be playable on an iPod, but all converters I've tried don't work.

When I attempt to sync a certain mp4 video file onto my iPod Touch, I get an error saying that the file is not the correct format. I’ve tried to convert it with multiple conversion programs, but all of them had come up with an error that prevented conversion. I suspect that the mp4 file is formatted for PS3, but how would I convert it to an iPod-recognizable format?
