Do SRO's (school resource officers) play a big part in protecting your child at school?

In my state, SROs are police officers assigned to different schools for the safety of the students. this takes manpower off the streets. do you think SROs are effective in deterring crime in schools? what is your opinion and can you give some examples of what would occur, if SROs cease to exist in public schools?
