Help for computer to TV cable?

I bought the cable that lets me watch a downloaded movie on my laptap on my TV. It worked just right at first but now does not. No changes in anything- I plugged it in this evening and nothing. Is there a computer-eese thing I can do? By the way, the packaging on it was like Trillion’s question and is in many pieces!
