How do i setup my iMac to display on TWO monitors?

i have the adapter (mini to VGA) and both plugged in, but secondary monitor has no signal. how to i set the iMac to dispaly the extended desktop/mirror, etc? the windows equivelant would be the right click/properties/settings/extend my desktop onto this monitor. does mac automatically do this or do i have to set it?
