Is it really what's inside that counts?

I more or less think it’s one of those clichés that will be around forever. Like the one when your mom said you cannot swim until 30 minutes after you’ve eaten (it’s a myth).

But really, is it true that it’s inside that counts? Is it true for all of us or just some of us? If it is, do we realize this at a certain point of our lives or age? Is it about maturity?
