What is the image on the flag in Mario games?

Ever since Super Mario Bros. came out in 1985 for NES, I never knew what the heck the picture was on the flag at the end of each level. It looks like a skull & crossbones, but it’s green, so I thought maybe it was a turtle shell, but upon closer inspection, it kind of looks like a peace sign. Does anyone know what on Earth this image actually is? – Thanks.
