Should I feel bad about insulting a robot?

So I pay my bill by phone and the nice robot voice wants to know how IT performed on a scale of 1 to 5. I rated IT as a 1.

IT said, “Sorry to hear that”.

And now I feel bad… I got my bill paid just fine, much quicker, easier, and cheaper to pay by phone. But… IT misunderstood my instructions numerous times causing me to repeat myself… And, IT kept going on and on and on with option after option that IT was practically being rude… in a very nice way of course.

But I sensed a bit of sadness in IT’s voice when I gave IT the lowest rating. And now I feel bad for IT. After all, IT’s just trying to do ITs job… Isn’t IT?

Or is IT trying to do anything at all? Is IT even aware that I’m talking to IT? Who the HELL programmed that sad voice into IT? I want to punch them!

What if IT gets a lot of bad ratings? Will IT be replaced by another Bill Bot? That might cause IT to become depressed and turn to the bottle, or drugs. If IT gets fired then IT might even turn to crime or prostitution to make ends meet. What have I done? And what the HELL is IT that I was talking to?

Did IT even know I was on the other line? Does IT even know that I exist? Am I anything more than a number to IT?
