What are the legal consequences of stealing a street sign?

My friend and I are having a debate of the consequences of stealing a street sign. I know, if you steal a sign, like lets say a stop sign and someone gets into a car accident and dies and the police find out you stole a street sign, you could be charged for manslaughter. But what if you steal a sign like a 25mph sign? What are the consequences for that? I mean, they are significant signs, and of course they have a purpose(otherwise they wouldn’t be there), but what if it’s already in a residential zone where you should know that the speed limit is 25?...I promise I did not steal a street sign, we just got into this situation in driving class and were trying to be very specific with questions to confuse my teacher, and then we decided that it’s actually a good question.
