Is the internet making us more self-centered?

I know people are always self-centered, it’s a natural state of being. But with the recent creation of websites like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and formspring.me, it seems like it’s getting out of hand.

A few years ago, there were plenty of people with a MySpace or Facebook page, but these days the majority of people have not only these two but a Twitter account, their personal blog or LiveJournal, a formspring.me page (For those who don’t know, formspring.me is just a place where people can post anonymous questions about you), and any of the myriad sites of a similar nature out there. Some of them are meant to be social networking sites, but most people seem to use them just to talk about themselves.

So here’s my question: Why do people feel the need to have not one but several websites dedicated just to them? Does having five or six websites like these make us more concerned with ourselves than we would be otherwise? And do you think the ever-growing popularity of these “me pages” on society in general?
