How much lube should I put on my Springfield XD-40 after cleaning?

After a year of using and cleaning my pistol I just pondered TODAY, “How do I know I am using the right amount of lubricant when cleaning my gun.
What do you look for to know you have applied the appropriate amount of protectant?
What does it look like when there is not enough/ too much?
Do you use separate cleaner and lube, or do you use the all in one?
Side note for the XD-40 (or similar gun): I got the compact for concealed carry a year ago, I just got Thunderwear and tried it on for the first time. How do you concealed carry your 40/45? Even the compact seems just huge.
