Ipod synching after wiping Mac?

An ipod can only be synched to one Mac. If that computer has to be wiped and a new OSX put on it, how can one retain the apps that were bought directly to the ipod; the computer wants to erase the ipod as it doesn’t know that it was the ipods master in a past life.
