What's a good default item to bring when someone makes you dinner?

A gentleman friend has invited me over for dinner tonight. I asked if I could bring anything; he said wine if I wanted more but he already has a bottle. I am not drinking at the moment, so it seems pointless to bring even more wine.

I don’t know what he’s making, so I can’t pick something that goes along with the theme of dinner. If I dated women I would just bring flowers. So what’s a good, generic dinner addition? Bread? Cheese?
