What plants can I grow on my balcony?

I have a south-facing balcony attached to my apartment. There are patches in the center of the balcony that seem to get a good amount of sun, but the edges are all shady.

Are there any plants or herbs I could realistically grow on it? The hardier the better; I have the opposite of a green thumb.
