Is it possible to turn an old laptop screen into a TV?

Asked by lilikoi (10105points) August 26th, 2010

I have an old Sager. The LCD was fully functional when the motherboard fried. The laptop originally had a built in TV tuner card, S-video ports, basically everything. I think I once hooked up a GameCube to the computer and played Mario on my laptop.

I managed to detach the screen from the rest of the business. There are like 50 vermicelli-esque wires coming out of the screen and feeding into a plastic 100-million-pin port thingy (technical term) that originally connected to a receptor port thingy on the motherboard.

It seems like I should be able to solder an identical receptor thingy to a new board and some kind of power source and some kind of input and at least make it into a ‘second desktop monitor’.

All of the ‘instructable’ type stuff I can find on the internet for these kinds of projects require a functional motherboard. Is there anything I can upcycle this screen into?
